Protected natural areas are tools to conserve and restore ecosystems, with sustainability being the foundation for their formation. From this perspective, more and more areas have been used to undertake tourist activities. However, many of them are conceived without a planning and evaluation of their feasibility. The present work pursued to reflect on the relevance of tourism on protected natural areas. The discussion arises about whether a protected site is made to tolerate visitors or to allow the natural interaction of organisms and with it the true conservation. In this sense, the documentary research shows experiences where tourism is exercised on these areas, whose impacts are a preamble to evaluate the viability of its practice. From the literature review, it is concluded that the transformation of a protected natural area into a tourist site cannot and should not be generalized, each site in a particular way must be studied, determining under what conditions its transformation could be possible, from the sustainability point of view.
