Abstract

The qualitative research aimed to identify the beliefs and contributions of women to sustainability in communities of the Actopan River basin, Veracruz, Mexico; in this way, it sought to understand how, based on their experiences, narratives and practices of environmental and social care were shaped. The study was grounded in ecofeminist and care theories. The results showed that, beyond their daily practices in gardening, family and community care, and their participation and leadership in agroecological markets, women held a set of beliefs that provided meaning and legitimacy to their knowledge about sustainability. The study contributed new theoretical insights by linking care with the defense of common goods and practical knowledge by evidencing local strategies of environmental management and cooperative solidarity. This analysis highlighted the fundamental role they played in the transmission of knowledge and in the articulation of the woman–sustainability relationship.
